Do you feel off-balance? 2021 may have been a difficult year for you and you found yourself dropping good health habits previously established. A new year brings a clean slate, a chance to start anew.  While it may seem overwhelming to think about beginning from square one, let’s start with one simple action and build from there.

If you feel like you got off track with your health and wellness and you don’t know how to start, consider taking time to do some reflection. Take time to evaluate where you are at the present moment, and use that picture to decide what is working and that you want to keep doing and what you would like to focus on in the coming year – you may not be as off track as you think. Let’s take a look at how taking the time for reflection and how it can be helpful for setting you up for success in 2022.

When you take the time to really look at where you are you will be able to make adjustments to set yourself up for success.

  • Learn from your mistakes:

If we don’t reflect on our mistakes, we will probably continue to complete them. But, if we are able to see what went wrong, we will better know how to prevent them in the future. Mistakes are a valuable learning tool instead of something to feel embarrassed about.

  • You will be encouraged:

Often when you take a step back and really reflect on your year, you will find that not all was bad or negative. You will be able to see the things you did right - your successes. This will allows you to celebrate. It opens up the space to realize how much you’ve done right, the good things in your life. Without reflection, it’s too easy to forget these things, and focus instead on our failures.

  • You gain perspective:

Often we are caught up in the day to day frustrations and can miss the big pictures. A mistake or a high-pressure project can become all consuming. It can be very overwhelming. But if you are able to step back and reflect, you will see clearly that in the grand scheme of things they don’t mean all that much. You are able to gain a valuable perspective.

Once you have had a chance to reflect on where you are and where you want to go – it’s time to make a restorative plan. Write down your goals for what you want to improve, what you want more of, and what you want to let go of in the coming year. You can return to this list next year when you reflect once again.
